Dr. Frederick Zugibe, Rockland’s First Medical Examiner, Passes Away

Dr. Frederick Zugibe, Rockland County’s first Medical Examiner, passed away on Friday at the age of 85. Dr. Zugibe held PhD and MD degrees and was appointed to the position of Medical Examiner in 1969 and retired in 2003, after 34 years. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Catherine, and six of his children, including Rockland County District Attorney, Thomas Zugibe. The doctor was instrumental in cardiovascular research that discovered diseases and was a fellow in American College of Cardiology. He was also a published author and has released books on much of his research. Visitation will be held today and Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the George M. Holt Funeral Home at 50 New Main Street in Haverstraw as well as a mass at St. Peter’s Church at 115 Broadway in Haverstraw on Wednesday September 11th. The family is asking that donations be made to United Hospice of Rockland in New City.
