The nonprofit group, advocating for change, is organizing a donation program for school supplies for East Ramapo students. This will be the 13th annual back- pack giveaway for the group. The thousands of students enrolled are returning to a school with fewer teachers and programs and advocating for change wants to make sure that they have the necessary supplies to succeed during the school year. Cassandra Edwards, a parent- activist and director of the nonprofit said that she expects 800 back-packs filled with notebooks, binders, paper, scissors, crayons, glue and other supplies that the students may need. Various corporations, and community organizations can sponsor 10 bags, which will only cost twenty- five dollars for the supplies and backpacks, but if the bags are purchased individually they will cost up to eighty dollars. Edwards, who started the program thirteen years ago for less fortunate children in the district of 9,000 students, wants to make this year especially great, since the major layoffs and budget deficits that the district is going through will make it difficult enough for some of the students to gain a good understanding level of the material. Advocating for change will be accepting donations and the back packs will be distributed to students during a free carnival at the William Darden Community Center in Memorial Park in East Ramapo on August 31 from 12 pm until all the packs are claimed by children, who must be accompanied by an adult to receive. The group will also be collecting gently used clothing throughout the event. For more information contact, Advocating for Change at (845) 364- 6896 or at www.afchange.org.
