On Friday, a group of 25 local residents shook up cultural lines walking single-file into a Kosher Grocery Store and choosing items to buy.
The “stop and shop” demonstration at Rockland Kosher Supermarket off Route 306 was the kickoff event by a new group called Wake up Rockland. The organizers said their purpose was to combat the growing phenomenon of segregation between Hasidic and non-Hasidic communities in the county, more specifically the East Ramapo Central School District.
The store owner wasn’t very supportive of the effort, steering demonstrators toward the door, initially saying “you have no right to do this. Get out of here.” As demonstrators left, he did thank the group for patronizing the store.
The group will be planning more events to get its message out.
